Ph.D. in Quantum Engineering

A research doctorate for students who intend to work at the front of quantum computation, simulation or quantum engineering.

The doctorate is a research degree. You will join one of the four pillars, work on an open problem, and be expected to publish. Supervision is by centre faculty, often jointly across pillars — a thesis on algorithm design for a sensing platform will be supervised from both CEQT and RCQT.

Programme structure

  • Coursework in quantum mechanics, quantum information and the computational methods relevant to your pillar.
  • A qualifying examination.
  • Thesis proposal and defence.
  • Original research leading to peer-reviewed publication.
  • Teaching or laboratory support, as a research or teaching assistant.

Entry

A master’s degree in physics, engineering, computer science, mathematics or a closely related field. Strong applicants direct from a bachelor’s degree are considered. Programming ability matters more than most applicants expect; a physics background without it is a disadvantage that can be repaired, but is better repaired before arrival.
