About the centre

A centre for quantum computing, simulation and algorithm design

CEQT is a centre of excellence within the Faculty of Engineering at Chiang Mai University. We work on the computational side of quantum technology: the algorithms, the simulations, and the software that connects them to real problems.

What we do

Quantum mechanics has entered a second generation, in which individual trapped quantum systems can be manipulated and measured without destroying them. That has turned a set of physical possibilities into an engineering problem — and engineering problems are solved with mathematics and code.

CEQT works on that side of the field. We formulate hard problems in forms a quantum machine can attack, we simulate systems that are too entangled or too adaptive to solve directly, we build the software layer that lets an algorithm actually run, and we work on the foundations that decide what is computable in the first place. By mastering classical engineering skills in order to exploit quantum phenomena, the centre aims at quantum-enhanced technologies for real-world applications.

Why this is organised the way it is

Most research-centre websites are organised around laboratories. That is the right shape for a centre whose output is apparatus: a laboratory is a room, the room contains an instrument, and the instrument does something you can photograph.

CEQT’s output is algorithms, code and simulations. These have no room number. So this site is organised around four research pillars — bodies of method rather than bodies of equipment — and around the problems those methods address. It means a visitor can arrive with a problem rather than with our organisational chart in hand.

Our place at Chiang Mai University

CEQT sits inside the governing structure of the Faculty of Engineering. It is one of two quantum centres at CMU. The other, the Research Center for Quantum Technology (RCQT), is a university-wide working group of quantum researchers with no physical space, and it works on quantum sensing and metrology — hardware as well as software.

The two centres share researchers and share a great deal of research. They do not share a remit, and this site does not duplicate RCQT’s. Where a subject belongs to them, we link to them.
