The quantum ecosystem at Chiang Mai University

A sustainable quantum ecosystem is not one laboratory. It is six connected programmes, split between the two CMU quantum centres according to what each does best.

Thailand’s difficulty in moving beyond middle-income status is, in part, a shortage of high-capability researchers and developers — which makes it hard to shift the country’s production base towards self-reliance in an era of disruptive technology. Quantum technology is treated in national policy as one of the second-wave S-curve industries that follow the Bio-Circular-Green economy, and it is attracting sustained public and private investment worldwide.

The Sustainable Quantum Ecosystem programme sets out six sub-projects. Four concern computation, software and education and are led from CEQT; two concern sensing and domestic manufacture and are led from RCQT.

1  Quantum Computing
CEQT — algorithm design, quantum and hybrid computation, and the applications that follow from them.
2  Quantum Software Park
CEQT — a shared software and tooling environment, and the route by which industry reaches quantum capability without building it from scratch.
3  Integrated Quantum Sensing System
RCQT — quantum sensors and metrology, integrated into deployable systems. See RCQT →

RCQT — domestic design and manufacture of quantum instrumentation. See RCQT →
5  Digital–Quantum Integration
CEQT — the control, electronics and software layer that lets quantum devices sit inside ordinary digital systems.
6  Quantum Education
CEQT — the graduate programmes, short courses and the researcher pipeline.

Why the split matters

Ecosystems fail when everybody claims everything. Dividing the six sub-projects explicitly — and saying so in public — means each has one owner, one budget line and one place where its results live. It also means a partner arriving with a sensing problem is sent to RCQT rather than politely handled by the wrong centre.
